A member of a cycling club has won £11,000 in compensation after a badly designed cycle path caused him to fall off his bicycle.
Stuart Bullen, 57, was travelling along the path when it suddenly ended, with no warning, in a raised kerb. His bicycle became trapped and he fell to the ground, badly fracturing both his shoulder and his wrist.
The injuries were so serious that Mr Bullen was unable to dress himself for weeks and could not drive for three months after the fall. He has not been able to return to his previous level of activity. Before the accident, Mr Bullen had cycled as many as 60 miles each day, but is now only able to make short bicycle journeys.
Doctors have told Mr Bullen that his injuries are likely to require further medical treatment in the future.
Mr Bullen brought a claim for compensation against the local county council. As the council has a duty to maintain safe cycle paths, it was argued that the cycle lane should have been better planned to help avoid the sort of accident suffered by Mr Bullen.
